A book review by Anna Kay Thomas
Reading this poetical and insightful book is like receiving mentorship from the marine biologist and environmental hero herself, Rachel Carson. In this book, she encourages a non-scholarly approach when it comes to teaching children or appreciating the beauty of nature for ourselves. It is written with a belief that it is better to experience nature than to be told about it, prioritizing a value and interest over recitation of facts. She says it best in this quote from the book, “It is not half so important to know as to feel”.

This guide to the breath-taking, irresistible joy that is found in the little things in nature draws you back into your childhood experiences with the outdoors. You accompany Ms. Carson and her young grandnephew on little adventures to see the beach during a rainy night, investigations to find the baby trees that must be used by small creatures in their winter festivities, stargazing outings, and identifying seashells.

For those of us who don’t have a beach or forest in our backyard, Ms. Carson includes fun activities like germinating a seed to then grow and observe in the kitchen window, getting a magnifying glass to see from a new perspective, witnessing the migration of birds at local parks, and other easy but eye-opening adventures.
Sharing her passion for the outdoors and teaching children, Ms. Carson leads by example how to be a good influence on the young people in our lives and how to be delighted by the splendor we are privileged to experience. This is a world worth being present for and enjoying.

A must-read for all who love learning and educating, for those who see the special details in the natural world, and for those who want the rising generation to go through life with an understanding and appreciation for all the wonders that await them just outside the door. Wishing you the best on your literary trek!

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” - Rachel Carson
Reflective Questions:
What in nature leaves you in awe?
How can you share this sense of wonder with the people in your life? (Suggestion: Press a flower or plant to give away, draw a picture of what amazes you to give as a gift, write a note describing what you see to mail to someone far away, schedule a picnic or adventure to see it with someone else, etc.)
