A book review by Anna Kay Thomas
A unique perspective and approach to environmental education can be found in this children’s book, written by the daughter of Jean Craighead George. It introduces the reader to what their life would look like if they happened to be a seahorse and contains well-rounded information on different species of seahorses. Providing an empathetic and thoughtful connection with the experiences of this saltwater fish, it explains what we would do in their shoes (or fins!). Tactfully covering the life cycle of seahorses, Ms. George captures your imagination by giving insight into the amazing creatures’ habitats, behaviours, and special abilities.

Ms. George’s words harmonize with the beautiful pictures, by different photographers, of seahorses that are paired with their common name and scientific name. Dwarf seahorses, Spotted seahorses, Tiger tail seahorses, White’s seahorses, and more are within its pages.

This children’s book is a must-read for those who want an introduction to the world of seahorses, for those wanting to be more mindful of the important creatures around them, and for those who can’t get enough of marine wildlife. Wishing you the best on your literary trek!

Reflective Question:
If you were to write a book about one creature, what would it be?
How would your book help raise awareness for that creature?
